A new series now being produced promises to thrill sci fi fans in a way that no show of that genre has done in recent times. The Fox network is planning to premiere a series titled, "Terra Nova sometime in May of 2011 and produced by Steven Spielberg, Dreamworks Television and Brannon Braga that is likely to knock the socks off of audiences with special effects, dinosaurs, time travel and the colonization of a new world!

You may have heard that Terra Nova would debut during the 2010-2011 season and that was Fox's original plan but there have been many problems early in the show's production. There have been conflicts between the writers and the producers. Big name stars have been courted to star on the show with no success. Costs have escalated to more than $10 million before even one scene was shot!

These problems now appear to be overcome. While there has still been no big name star signed for Terra Nova's cast, that may actually be a good thing. A full main cast of mostly experienced actors and actresses has now been acquired who won't drain the series of its entire production budget. That will allow Spielberg, Braga and the other producers to ensure that Terra Nova has the funds necessary to develop this sci fi extravaganza!

Jason O'Mara ("Life on Mars") will star as a father and husband named Jim Shannon who leads his family into a past world of clean air and natural beauty to escape their 22nd century existence where the Earth is nearly uninhabitable due to pollution gone wild and global warming. Of course, nothing every goes quite that smoothly in life or on television. The Shannons must also deal with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. They also find that some of the leaders of the Terra Nova colony may be somewhat corrupt.

Shelley Conn ("Mistresses" on the BBC) will play Jim's wife Elisabeth whose career as a surgeon makes her a valuable asset to the colony. Stephen Lang ("Avatar") will play his usual "tough guy" role as Terra Nova's leader who doesn't compromise his objectives for anyone. Younger fans should be pleased to see Landon Liboiron (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Jim and Elisabeth's son Josh who isn't happy about their move because he has to leave his girlfriend back in 2149. Naomi Scott ("Life Bites") plays Josh's younger sister Maddy who consistently puts herself in danger by spying on powerful forces that she suspects are up to no good.

Newcomer Alana Mansour will assume the role of the Shannon's youngest child. Allison Miller ("Kings"), Mido Hamada ("24) and Christine Adams ("The Whole Truth") will round out the major roles on the show.

In any case, it's hard to imagine that Terra Nova could be anything but a huge megahit with Spielberg, Braga and such a talented cast. The only danger of failure appears to be the possibility that it will cost Fox more to produce than it generates in revenue.
